2014 Season

The league celebrated 10 seasons of Lucky Dog Racing and now looked ahead to start their next 10. On February 7th, 2014 the league officially celebrated it's 10th birthday and began it's second decade. With it's new beginning, the league saw some changes to begin the season. NASCAR began their new eliminator Chase and Lucky Dog Racing would change theirs as well. The council decided not to follow the Chase the same as NASCAR but rather split the Chase in half with the top 8 of 16 Chase members moving on to the Championship round. The eliminated members would battle it out for 9th place and those members would also be eliminated from the Chaser Eraser as well.

The Nationwide series saw a change as well, leaving the ten spot gamble after just one season and starting the Nationwide bonus which would allow members to use any driver in the race as a bonus driver. It was also the 10th season for the Nationwide series which was a nice accomplishment. The Truck series kept the same rules with no change.

There was a new game started in the Facebook group called the Manufacturer Challenge. Each week members would pick three drivers from the three manufacturers in a schedule that switched between the Cup, Nationwide and Truck series. 22 members played during the season but only half would remain consistent all season long.

Prior to the start of the season, two members would be inducted into the hall of fame. After the voting was concluded, those two members were Stephen DiCaprio and Jordan Hunt who would become the 5th and 6th inductees.

Three rookies would start their Cup careers in 2014. Starting at Daytona, Joe Tenpenny, Fred Sanchez and Dione Baker were in the field for the first time. Later on Shane Burton and Kelly Wolfe would join bringing the total amount of rookies to five. Two new multi-car teams would start as well. Jose Rodriguez founded El Diablo & The Magic Men Motorsports and added Greg Miller who left Coast To Coast Racing, Ron Blackman and Will Riney who shut down his former team, Southern Style Racing. Another new team was 5:16 Racing which consisted of the husband wife team of Leon and Dione Baker.

Before the first official race of the season, the Sprint Unlimited took place with those members who picked enough polesitters in 2013. Terry Howell won for the first time and ensured that he would also make all future races as well.

The Daytona 500 finally kicked off the 2014 season and was won by the same winner of the Unlimited, Terry Howell. That was the first time in history that would happen. Despite the same driver winning the Unlimited and Daytona 500, nobody dominated in the wins department. The first repeat winner was rookie Fred Sanchez who won the 6th and 11th race of the year. No driver would win more than 2 races though. Leon Baker unofficially did since he won two races and the all-star race.

The points standings was led by a few different drivers but it was Ryan Smith who led the final seven weeks leading up to the Chase. The 16 members who ended up making the Chase was Fred Sanchez, Gary Wheat, John Wilson, Ryan Smith, Randy Cook, Charquillia Addison,Ed Blackman, Joe Tenpenny, Robby Stone, Ron Blackman, Stephen DiCaprio, Dean Higley, Jose Rodriguez, Jordan Hunt and making it in the final race, Lou Demian and Kevin Sullivan.

It was an interesting chase for Kevin Sullivan since he just barely made it in but but up some great finishes during the Chase and in the final week was just 9 points behind rookie Joe Tenpenny for the Championship. Kevin was able to finish enough positions in front of Joe to win the championship for the first time in his career. Kevin won by just 2 points over Joe making it the second closest race in history. Joe finished in 2nd place and won rookie of the year and last year's champion, Lou Demian finished in 3rd place.

Racing Traditions, Inc. won their 4th championship but first with their new lineup and with Stephen DiCaprio as owner.

In the Nationwide series, Jose Rodriguez won giving him both a Nationwide and Truck championship. Curt Manning won the rookie of the year. It was a good year for Shane Burton who finally got into the Cup series and won the Truck series championship too. Terry Smith won Truck rookie of the year.

In the LROC series, Lucky Dog Racing put together another strong season and won their fourth championsip over The Cool Pool and P10 Select. LDR's owner won the LROC championship for the first time and now has won championships in each of the four series.

Other winners for the year were Ray Perrotta who won his first streak to the finish championship and Don Hardison who won a close race over Marvin Jones in the first season of the Manufacturer Challenge. Dean Higley won a narrow battle in the Chaser Eraser while Kelly Wolfe won for the first time in the Yahoo group.

Another successful season came to an end as the new decade for the league began. Next season the Cup series will celebrate its 400th race and the Truck series is 200th which will be another big milestone for both leagues. The Nationwide series will also be changing its name to the Xfinity series which will also begin a new era.
