2013 Season

In 2013, Lucky Dog Racing celebrated its 10th Cup series season. It was a major milestone for the league which ran its first race back in May 2004. The league has a rich history and keeps building on it from year to year. It also tries to add new features as well. This season the league added a new easier to use mobile site where users could easier access the league through their cellphones.

All-time Nationwide and Truck series standings were added during the off-season and a new triple win club was introduced to show off the members who had won a race in all three series. The Cup series drivers page also saw a change by adding the pictures of everyone's cars next to their names.

The new Gen 6 cars took to the track for the first time in 2013 and the new models were introduced to the league as well. A total of 17 new cars were created for members who requested changes.

Prior to the season starting, the league voted on the next two members to enter the Hall of Fame. Dean Higley and Harry Jeffery were granted the honor to become the 3rd and 4th members inducted.

Three rookies started their Cup careers at Daytona, Natalie Jones, Matt Minnich and last year's Nationwide champion and rookie of the year, Brian Blair. Later on Bill Walters and Jay Smogolski would also be added to the Cup field. There was a cost though, the league lost two of its long time veterans, John Sherman during the off-season and Sue Perna later into the year.

There were also a couple of new multi-car teams added as well. Brian Blair and Matt Minnich joined together to form South Mountain Motorsports. Mark Mason formed Slingshot Motorsports from the rest of the defunct Mafia Motorsports after John Sherman left. Ray Perrotta also joined the team.

Slingshot Motorsports got off to a good start at Daytona after their one teammate, Jessy Turgeon kicked the season off by winning the Daytona 500. The following race was won by Lou Demian at Phoenix and then Jose Rodriguez at Las Vegas. The first two time winner was Ron Blackman who won at Bristol and Texas. Shortly after, Lou Demian would win his 2nd at Richmond. Dean Higley would take the all-star win this year, his first win in the event.

The points standings leading up to the chase wasn't dominated by any one member. We saw leads by Teeder Jenkins who led for the first time ever, Lou Demian who led for the first time since one week in 2006 and Bob Douce who led the last seven weeks leading up to the Chase.

Ron Blackman went into the Chase as the number one seed after scoring three wins. Lou Demian went in 2nd with his 2 wins, Jessy Turgeon was 3rd, Bob Douce 4th, Ron Parlacoski Jr. 5th, Paul Scannell 6th, Robby Stone 7th, Jose Rodriguez 8th, Brian Blair was the only rookie in 9th, and 2011 Champion Harry Jeffery in 10th. Last year's champion, Dean Higley did not make it in. The two wildcard spots went to Leon Baker and Ray Perrotta.

Bob Douce went into the Chase leading the standings and even though he went in as the 4th seed, he took back the lead thanks to a 2nd place finish at Chicagoland. Unfortunately for Bob, that would be the final time that he led that year. Lou Demian took over the points lead at New Hampshire and did not look back after that. During the Chase he amassed 5 top 10's and 1 top 5. During the 2nd half of the Chase, Ron Blackman closed in every race until the two were separated by just 4 points heading into Homestead.

Ron nearly won the championship too... his drivers were doing better than Lou's until his one driver Paul Menard went up in flames and fell out of the race. The sealed the championship for Lou who finished 6 spots ahead of him in the race and 10 points in the standings.

Lou had three Nationwide championships and two Truck champions but he had been trying to win a Cup championship for 10 years now. He finally got it done and became the first player to win a championship in all three series.

Northeast Ohio Motorsports won the team championship for the second year in a row and Bob Douce won the MVT award. John Magee won the best of the rest award. It was a big year for Brian Blair who won not only the Cup rookie of the year but won the Truck Championship as well. That gave him two championship years in a row. Over in the Truck series, Jack Thesier held off Stephen DiCaprio to win his first championship.

Over in the LROC series, the Lucky Dog Racing team had a dominant year by winning 13 races and winning their third championship. One of their drivers, Jordan Hunt, also won the drivers championship.

Overall 2013 was a good year for Lucky Dog Racing. The team got to celebrate its 10th Cup series season and look forward to 2014 when the Nationwide series will hit their 10th year. The first decade was full of ups and downs and had plenty of things to remember. Who knows what is in store as we look forward to the next one.
