2011 Season

2011 was the eighth season for Lucky Dog Racing. There were a few changes the league saw but most notably was the points change. There has been a few minor changes to the points system in previous seasons but the league had always used its own system. That changed in 2011 when NASCAR had adopted a new simplified points system and Lucky Dog Racing decided to follow suit. that means that the for the first time, NASCAR and Lucky Dog Racing would be using the same points. The penalty points for drivers not making a race would also be modified as well.

Five rookies would be starting the Cup series at Daytona. Joe Levis, Greg Eichele, Ludwig Hormann, Jr., Jessy Turgeon and Teeder Jenkins would all be graduating from the Nationwide series to come up to the big league. While we had a number of new players join us, one of our original members would not return after the offseason. Carol Siddens had raced in the league's inaugural race at Texas in 2004. After her departure, that left only three original members.

We had a new four car team from during the off-season as well. Ed Blackman and Harry Jeffery merged their 2 car team of SOCAL Sprint Car Association with Kevin Sullivan who left Northeast Ohio Motorsports and two time Cup champion Greg Miller. Coast To Coast Racing would become the new team, owned by Kevin. With a new team forming, there was also a multi-car team leaving as well. Memphis Motorsports closed up shop after just one season.

The Budweiser Shootout arrived as usual as the league's first exhibition race of the season. This year there would be a different qualifying procedure. The last couple of seasons relied on picking enough polesitters to make the race but NASCAR changed their procedure to allow the previous season Chase drivers along with past champions, past Daytona winners and rookies of the year. Lucky Dog Racing followed with the same procedure. Bob Douce ended up winning the Shootout for the second year in a row.

Daytona 500 weekend started with the Truck series which began its fifth season with Dave Smith winning. Fred Moore went to victory lane in the Nationwide series which started its seventh season. While Trevor Bayne was a surprise winner in the Daytona 500, Robby Stone went to victory lane for the very first time in Lucky Dog Racing.

The next few races saw a victory by Marvin Jones and back to back victories by Kevin Sullivan. Most surprisingly was the performance by John Wilson who had struggled in previous seasons but had a big turnaround this year. John would actually lead in the standings from mid April all the way to the start of the Chase. He would also get a 2nd win right before the All-star race which was won by rookie Teeder Jenkins.

This season Lucky Dog Racing would also use the new Chase qualification method which meant the top 10 drivers and two wildcard drivers, those with the most wins in the top 20. Those two wildcards ended up being Harry Jeffery and Hurricane Sidwell. They joined the top 10 drivers of Kevin Sullivan, John Wilson, Robby Stone, Bob Douce, Gary Wheat, Troy Wiggins, Dean Higley, Ryan Smith, Rene Nadeau and John Magee. Unlike last year when two teams placed all four drivers in, only two teams had two drivers this year.

During the Chase, only two Chase drivers ended up winning, Ryan Smith and Hurricane Sidwell. Hurricane actually ended up winning 4 races during the season, the most of any members. During the Chase, nobody was as consistent as Harry Jeffery who had finished outside the top 10 just three times. By the time Homestead rolled around, he had no trouble keeping the lead and winning the championship, but he did it in style by winning the race too.

Coast To Coast Racing finished the season with a perfect 1-2-3-4 finish, just the third team in league history to do it. They finally took the championship away from Racing Traditions, Inc. who had won it the first three years of the team format.

In the Nationwide series, Lou Demian won the championship for the third time while Jose Rodriguez won both the championship and rookie of the year in the Truck series. In the sixth season of LROC, Lucky Dog Racing won the team championship for the 2nd year in a row while Don Hardison Jr. took the driver championship. Ron Blackman won the Yahoo Championship, Kevin Sullivan won the Chaser Eraser and Gary Wheat won a close battle in the Streak to the Finish.

Near the end of the season there were a couple late replacements as Jeffrey Ouderkirk and Lincoln Griffin exited the league. Ron Blackman and Mitch McCown were called up to replace them and will be battling for rookie of the year as the league starts its ninth season in 2012.
